The Sacred Four
Goddess Yamuna
The source of the Yamuna river and seat of Goddess Yamuna. The trek to Yamunotri is 6 km from Janki Chatti, passing through dense forests and hot springs. Pilgrims cook rice in the Surya Kund hot spring as prasad.
Goddess Ganga
The origin of the sacred Ganga river. The Gangotri temple sits on the banks of the Bhagirathi river, where King Bhagirath is said to have meditated to bring Ganga to earth. The actual source, Gaumukh glacier, is 19 km further.
Lord Shiva
One of the 12 Jyotirlingas and the most revered Shiva shrine in the Himalayas. The ancient stone temple, believed to be built by the Pandavas, survived the 2013 floods miraculously. The 16 km trek from Gaurikund is a profound spiritual experience.
Lord Vishnu
The most visited of the four dhams and one of the 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu. The colourful temple stands against the backdrop of the Neelkanth peak. Tapt Kund hot spring near the temple is considered sacred for bathing before darshan.

May – June
Peak season — pleasant weather, all shrines open. Book early.
September – October
Post-monsoon — clear skies, fewer crowds, stunning views.
July – August
Monsoon — heavy rains, landslide risk. Not recommended.
November – April
Shrines closed for winter. Ukhimath (Kedarnath) and Joshimath (Badrinath) are winter seats.
